L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid commonly known as suntheanine or simply theanine with the 'L' simply representing its chemical structure. It is a herbal extract of green tea, but is also found in certain edible mushrooms. It was discovered in 1949 as a component of tea leaves, and is commonly used in food items (e.g. chocolates, beverages etc.) throughout the world.
